ABOUT PHOTOGRAVURE: Photogravure (or héliogravure) is an intaglio printmaking process utilizing a carefully etched copper plate made from the original negative/image. Prints are made by pressing suitable paper heavily down upon the inked copper plate which has been intricately etched to varying depths corresponding with the actual tonality of the original negative, This precisely etched plate combined with a fine “honeycomb” screen controls the amount of ink to be transferred to the paper at any given point in direct proportion to the variation of tone in the original image. The result is a true continuous tone print which combines many qualities of a traditional silver based photograph with a tactile feel similar to an etching, engraving or lithograph. Rich in tonal detail, the photogravure process produces delicately rendered shades for a look which is unique in the world of photographic print making. In the early to mid 1900’s photogravure was selected (when budgets allowed) for special high quality publishing and portfolio projects, but due to its significant expense and labor, the process is rarely seen today. From Man Ray and Ruth Bernhard to Brett Weston and Ansel Adams, many of the world’s most renown photographic masters have published their images in the rich photogravure process. ***WARNING: The above listing description is COPYRIGHT protected material under United States & International Copyright & Intellectual Property laws. KURT MARKUS Batwings And Spur 1989 Photogravure Signed ltd 1/300

Wonderful original signed limited hand pulled, dust grained, photogravure printed by Jon Goodman, the acknowledged master of the technique, from the negative by Kurt Markus (1947-2022) , renowned western photographer, of one of his most iconic images: “Batwings And Spur” in 1989. This was issued for the 1989 Vail Analyst Conference of US WEST in a paper portfolio with description of the print and limitation and with a semi-transparent cover sheet, This sheet is signed by former US WEST Chief executive John Trygg. Everything is in pristine condition. Sheet size is 16″ by 12 1/2″; image plate size is 8 3/8″ by 6 7/8″. Signed in pencil by Kurt Markus and numbered 140/300. Needless to say this edition is quite rare.KURT MARKUS is an internationally acclaimed fine art photographer known for his black-and-white portraits, magazine and fashion work, landscapes, and nudes. The recipient of many of American photography’s highest honors, including several Clio Awards and Life magazine’s Alfred Eisenstaedt Award, Markus has also directed music videos and documentaries, written screenplays, and shot advertising campaigns for such diverse clients as BMW, Nike, and Kodak. His work has been presented at numerous museums and prestigious emporiums of fine art, including the Peter Fetterman Gallery in Santa Monica, the Obscura Gallery in Santa Fe, and New York City’s Staley-Wise Gallery. Critics have praised his “unique vision” and his “powerful sense of realism.” A reviewer in The New Yorker once called his images “quietly, unfailingly artful.” In 1994, Markus was one of five photographers selected to participate in a special 25th anniversary edition of Rolling Stone presenting the living legends of rock-n-roll.Markus is perhaps best known for his portraits of cowboys in the American West, a subject that, given his Montana background, came naturally to him. His cowboy images—gritty, respectful, and somehow timeless—possess an elegiac quality as they document a world of toil and rugged competence that’s slowly vanishing from the American landscape. Markus has published three books of cowboy photography: After Barbed Wire, Buckaroo, and Cowpuncher, which in 2002 was named the most outstanding art book of year by the Cowboy Hall of Fame.
