SEAL BEACH, California Circa 1920 View of Joy Zone Pier Built in 1916 Replaced the original pier built in 1906 which was 6 ft wide and at a length of 1,865 feet was the longest pier south of San Francisco At the end of the pier can be seen the scintillator lights. During the period of 1916 to 1930 the public was not allowed on the end of the pier because of high-voltage danger. A 100-kilowat generator powered 50 enormous lights which produced a combined 3,600,000 candlepower. Mounted on poles, the rainbow-colored lights could be turned in all directions and their light could be seen from 20 miles away. Contemporary print on medium weight paper – NOT A POSTCARD.
