MATTHIAS HOCH ‘Rom #19’, 2004/2005 SIGNED Color Photograph Limited Edition #8/25

MATTHIAS HOCH (b. 1958, Germany) ‘Rom (Rome) #19’, 2004/2005 SIGNED Color PhotographColor Coupler Print (C-Print / Chromogenic / Ektacolor), 2001/2002, ed. 25. Dimensions: 17-1/2″ x 22″ sheet, 13-1/4″ x 16-3/4″ image. Professionally and archivally hinged into 19-3/4″ x 23-3/4″ mat. SIGNED, titled ‘Rom 19, 2004’ and numbered ‘8/25’ in black marker by artist on verso. Excellent condition aside from slight rippling at hinges (in margins under mat). REFERENCE: Matthias Hoch: Fotografien / Photographs, Hatje Cantz Verlag, Germany, 2005, plate 54. This image is from a recent series of photographs done in Rome, Italy, that reflect the influence of a softer, more ‘southerly’ light. Yet here as well, Matthias Hoch persistently documents developments – and wrong turns – in European urban architecture of the past several decades. Matthias Hoch’s photographs of interiors and exteriors function both as a study of architectural detail and a commentary on the dehumanizing aspects of contemporary city planning. Often starkly monumental, his powerful compositions derive rhythm from sequences of elements and color fields, whether glass windows in an office building, or corrugated steel wall panels. Although photographed in cities throughout Europe, Hoch’s focused approach decontextualizes his subject material, melding distinct individual features into a shared architectural vocabulary. Hoch’s delight in capturing the unexpected or overlooked in cities is often humorously underlined by the works titles which divulge the general, if not specific, subject location. Hoch received his Degree in Photography at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst, Leipzig, Germany. He has exhibited throughout Europe, Canada and America and has work in the collections of many museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; Museum Ludwig, Köln, Germany; Deutsches Historisches Museum, Berlin, Germany; and Suermondt Ludwig Museum, Aachen, Germany. This is an authentic (NOT a modern reprint), vintage 1929 photogravure by the renown photographer, teacher and artist Professor Karl Blossfeldt. Catapulted to international fame some 80 years ago by his amazing isolated close up photographs of strange botanical forms, Blossfeldt was an early pioneer in the transformation of photography from a medium of documentation to that of an art form. He devoted his entire 30 year career to the close up photographing of plant sections creating engaging images which crossed into the abstract art world. Blossfeldt designed and made his own camera which allowed him to magnify his plant specimens up to 30 times their actual size. Today he is considered an important and influential figure in photographic history and his work is held in numerous collections and museums throughout the world. IMPORTANT NOTE: These may be the most difficult prints we have ever tried to make scans of – a testament to the fine gravure printing of these images as they possess the best qualities for which gravure is known – subtle shading and a wide range of delicate tone. This delicate and subtle toning/shading (particularly the background) in many cases cannot be accurately picked up by the scanner. There is a light shaded/tinted background behind the botanical subject in many of these plates which the scanner cannot pick up – it therefor appears as a white background in these web scans when in fact there is a soft light teal color field behind the botanical subject as a backdrop. This photogravure is guaranteed to be authentic and comes with a hand signed CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY (COA) with unique individual registered serial number from the Finephoto Vintage Archive & Database. Under magnification this plate shows a tight “honeycomb” cell structure, uniform pressing of ink and a wide range of tone – all indicative of a quality sheet fed gravure print. The watermark word “Finephoto” does not appear on the actual print.READY FOR FRAMING & DISPLAY! – Your vintage print will arrive ready to be placed directly into a standard size frame.
